A tripping breaker is annoying — but it's also doing its job. Here are the most common causes and when to call a pro.
A circuit breaker trips to protect you. When it senses more current than a circuit can safely carry, it cuts the power before wires overheat. So while a tripping breaker is frustrating, it's actually a sign your safety system is working. The question is why it keeps happening.
Overloaded circuit
This is the most common cause. Too many devices on one circuit — space heaters, hair dryers, microwaves, and the like — draw more power than the circuit is rated for. Try moving some devices to another circuit. If the trips stop, you've found your answer.
Short circuit
A short happens when a hot wire touches a neutral wire, often inside a damaged cord or outlet. Shorts cause a sudden, large current surge and an immediate trip. A burning smell or scorch marks around an outlet are red flags — stop using it and call an electrician.
Ground fault
Common in kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoors, a ground fault occurs when a hot wire contacts a ground. GFCI outlets and breakers are designed to catch these quickly to prevent shock.
When to call a professional
- The same breaker trips repeatedly with little load
- You smell burning or see scorching
- Breakers feel hot to the touch
- Lights flicker across multiple rooms
- A breaker won't reset at all
